Tomatoes that are receiving plenty of TLC can grow very rapidly. If you want to keep your organic tomato plants healthy and growing at their greatest potential, then they must have needed support.

Does this mean they need someone to pat them on the stem and tell them what a good job they’re doing?

Well, if you want to do that – feel free. The kind of support this post is referring to, however, has to do with the type of support that keeps your tomatoes off of the ground. Although many organic gardeners realize that it is important to support their tomato plants, they don’t know how to support its growing stages.

So how do you support your tomatoes throughout the growing stages?

It’s important to select a method of keeping them off the ground, and stick to it. You can try stakes, trellises, or tomato cages. Whatever works for you is fine, since it’s important that it be maintained.

Not only will supporting your tomatoes throughout the growing stages make them healthier and help them bear more fruit, but it also makes them easier to care for. Gardeners can easily spray, dust, and prune well-supported tomato plants. Of course, it’s recommended that they are suckered, or pruned, before they are supported. This can cut down on the amount of tomato vine branches with which you’ll have to deal.
