It’s no surprise that fertilizing a tomato and/or vegetable garden is essential. The inevitable fertilization question is, when should you fertilize your tomatoes and vegetables?

Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize

The best fertilization method can have a lot to do with the kind of tomato you are growing. If you want the very best results from your vegetable garden, then the most important thing for you to keep in mind is: timing is everything.

Although you can use your same fertilizer on various kinds of tomatoes, timing can vary. If you are growing Cooking Tomatoes or Cherry Tomatoes, then try adding fertilizer to soil before planting. Vegetables that respond well to this kind of fertilization treatment are carrots, onions, parsley, asparagus, and chives.

SPECIAL TIP: Try using a low nitrogen fertilizer when your tomatoes begin developing. Continue fertilizing your tomatoes every 7-10 days. Sandy soil often needs more fertilization than clay soil.

Potted Tomatoes

If your tomatoes are being grown in pots, try to fertilize them weekly. Make sure your potted tomatoes get plenty of TLC and sunlight. Just because they aren’t in the ground doesn’t mean they can’t be healthy and tasty!

Protect Your Plants

If temperatures are going to drop, be sure you cover your fertilized soil with a protective cover. Happy Fertilizing!
