Building a trellis for your garden can help you give your tomatoes the support they need. By keeping the tomato plants off of the ground, the plant will be able to produce far more fruit.

There are a variety of ways to build a trellis, but they all have the potential of making your tomatoes very happy!

Cattle Panel

One way you can build a trellis for your tomatoes is with a cattle panel. Since this material is tall and sturdy, it has some definite benefits for tomato plants. It can give your plants the support they need as they climb. For this method you can use metal tubing to support the panel, and wooden planks for the frame.

The String Method

Another form of trellis support is the String Method. To build this kind of trellis you just need twine and electrical conduit. The heavy gauge twine can be tied to the bottom of tomato plant stems for ultimate support.

Mesh Trellis

You can also build a trellis with strong wire mesh supported by electrical conduit. This type of trellis can be attached to the framework with heavy metal clips. On the vertical supports, lighter wire can be attached. Before you begin planting your tomatoes, be sure that this kind of trellis is built first.
