In order to answer that question, one must first determine whether or not a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.

Vegetables

Although the term vegetable is used for culinary purposes, it is not really a scientific term. ¨Fruit,¨ on the other hand, is common botanical terminology.

The dictionary gives a rather broad definition of a vegetable. They are anything ´made from, obtained from, or containing plants or plant products.´

Fruits

Fruit is a type of produce in which the seeds have developed within. Anyone who has eaten, prepared, or in our case – grown a tomato, has noticed the presence of seeds. Although tomatoes have clearly developed seeds within, they are often called a vegetable because of their culinary function.

Tomatoes

Despite their common culinary usage, the presence of inner seeds makes it obvious that tomatoes are definitely fruits and not vegetables. So how should they be planted?

Just think about how apples, oranges, and pears are grown. Like many other fruits, they grow on trees. Tomatoes, however, grow on a plantlike vine in a garden tended by love and understanding.

Tomatoes grow more like a vegetable, and they need plenty of care to thrive. Keep reading this blog for innovative ways to tend your ¨vegetable¨ garden!
